Gene Austin "Pop" Porter, 84, of Colonial Heights passed away in the early morning hours of January 16, 2017. Born April 20, 1932 in Colonial Heights, Virginia, Gene was the second son of Floyd and Lucy Porter. Growing up, he lived with his parents and brother, Floyd B. Jr (F.B.), in Petersburg. Upon graduating from Petersburg High School, he joined the United States Army, where he served as a Private during the Korean War. He spent the next 40 years working for Allied/Spectra chemical plant, moving his way up the ladder, becoming a foreman and leader in the organization. He retired in 1994, but that did not last long. His strong work ethic and need to be productive led him back to work at PreCon for a few more years, before he finally decided to take it easy. He spent his spare time working on wood crafts, refinishing furniture, doing yard work, and cheering for the Washington Redskins and the Nationals. He also taught Sunday School for many years, and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 41 years, Margaret Rose Powell Porter, his parents Floyd B. Porter Sr. and Lucy Porter, his older brother F.B, and his son-in-law Keith Underwood. He is survived by his two daughters, Vanessa Perkins of Colonial Heights and Amy Porter Crump and son-in-law Joey Crump of New Kent County. In addition, he leaves behind three granddaughters and four grandsons, Emily Underwood, Justin Underwood, Thomas Patteson, Bryan Patteson, Meredith Reese, Caleb Reese and Rachel Reese. He was also blessed to have three great-granddaughters, Hailey Patteson, Adelynn West and Faye Patteson. The family will receive friends at the Crater Road Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory on Wednesday, January 18th from 7:00-8:30pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 19th at 1:30pm, also at the Crater Road Chapel of the E.
