Dr. George Ray Partin, 87, of Matoaca, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born in Matoaca, he was the son of the late Lester H. and Virgie Kitchen Partin. He was a lifelong member of Matoaca United Methodist Church where he served as a Lay Leader, and was a veteran in the United States Navy during World War II. He graduated from the Richmond Professional Institute, the University of Virginia, and received his doctorate in education at the American University. He was employed with ALMC and retired as the Director of Educational Technology at Fort Lee from 1958 to 1992. He served as Chairman of the Chesterfield County School Board, he also belonged to the Petersburg Festival Chorus, and played with the Southern Serenaders for many years. Dr. Partin was a member of the Board for John Tyler Community College and Virginia State University, as well as the Chesterfield County Historical Society, the Goose Island Hunt Club, and the Ruritan International. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Wray "Wugga" Partin; daughters, Kelly P Mattson and husband, Curt of Richmond and Victoria P. "Vikki" Ward and husband, Cornell of Surry County; granddaughters, Erika Ward Hahn and husband, Terry and Lauren Mattson Matthews and husband, Benjamin; grandson, Glenn Ward; great-granddaughter, Olivia Grace Hahn. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 in Matoaca United Methodist Church, 6301 River Road, Matoaca with the Reverend Richard Gordon and the Reverend Charles Philips officiating. Interment will follow in East Matoaca Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ettrick/Matoaca Rescue Squad, 5711 River Road, Matoaca, Virginia 23803 or the Community Outreach Building Fund at Matoaca United Methodist Church. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all the healthcare workers and caregivers who so lovingly and compassionately cared for him these past months.
