George Edwards Grammer, 96, of Colonial Heights, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 23, 2017. George was a devout member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church for over 70 years. He had also served his country during World War II as a Navy "Seabee" within a Naval construction battalion. To those that knew and loved him, George was a loving father and grandfather that was always there for the family for everything, especially when it came to providing supervision as "the world's greatest supervisor." Born to the late L.Q. and Annie Evans Grammer. George was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Irmalee Flippin Grammer; his son, Russell "Rusty" Grammer, and his siblings, John W. Grammer, Elsie G. Johnston, Lemuel D. Grammer, and David E. Grammer. George is survived by his daughters, Connie Lee Barfell and her husband, Jim, Terry Lynn Bell, and Peggy Jean Hedblom; his grandchildren, Christine Hedblom, Chad Custalow, Kaitlin Hedblom, and J.C. Bell, II; extended family, June and L.C. Messer, Kathy and Richard Williams, and Ronnie Robertson, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would also like to extend immense appreciation to George's special friend, Sylvia Marie Thomas, for acting as George's caretaker in his greatest time of need. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834 with interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park 2901 W. Hundred Rd, Chester, VA 23831. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening between 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church in George's memory.
