George Whitman Jr.

George Melvin Whitman, Jr, 80, a life- long resident of the Petersburg, Colonial Heights and Dinwiddie area, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2014. He was the son of the late George Melvin Whitman Sr. and Carrie Mure Whitman Hawkins, and was preceded in death by a brother, Luther Irving Whitman. Mr. Whitman was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. He was the proprietor and surveyor of Whitman Surveying. He attended Reams Independent Church and was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284, Fraternal Order of the Eagles #882, and the Matoaca Sportsman Club where he served as President for three years. Mr. Whitman is survived by three daughters, Cheryl McCormack (Bruce) of Panama City Beach, Florida, Donna Humphries of Vernon, Florida and Laurie Owens (Gary) of Vernon, Florida; a son, George Melvin Whitman, III., of Petersburg; grandchildren, Dr. Shannon O'Hara of Tampa, Florida, Ryan O'Hara of Chicago, Illinois, Cody Humphries of Vernon , Florida, Nichole Kennedy (Leon) of Vernon, Florida, and John Owens (Brianna) Ft. Walton Beach, Florida; great grandchildren, Tanner Kennedy, Gavin Owens and Bronson Owens; numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday December 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Hawkins Family Cemetery with Pastor Ron Plyer officiating. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial donations be made to the Dinwiddie Volunteer Fire & EMS Co. #1 P.O. Box 181 Dinwiddie, Virginia 23841.
