Born Gladys Lee Mitchell, April 18, 1921, the daughter of the late William Luther and Mattie George Mitchell, passed to her Maker, Saturday, October 17, 2009 in the home she loved on Chestnut Ridge Farm. Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her beloved husbands, John Royall Robertson Jr. and Raymond Burdine Norton; one daughter-in-law, Joan D. Robertson; two brothers, John W. Mitchell and George R. Mitchell; four sisters, Elsie M. Rice, Ruby M. Cook, Marjorie Mitchell, and Ruth Mitchell. Mrs. Norton was an active member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church from childhood until present, serving the Lord as a choir member and with the United Methodist Women for years. Mrs. Norton was well known in southern Chesterfield County as a community servant. She was an active member of Woodpecker Grange, served as leader of Woodpecker 4-H for years, Chesterfield Home Demonstration Club, Chesterfield County Fair Association, and the South Chesterfield Seniors Group. Mrs. Norton is survived by two sons, George Wilmer Robertson (Carol Sparks), and J. Royall Robertson III (Kim Toney); three daughters, Rebecca R. Henderson and husband, Arthur, Elizabeth R. Honea and husband, Paul, and Sarah R. Zammett and husband, John; stepchildren, Ruth Parker and husband, John, and Ray Norton; a daughter-in-law, Sandra R. Robertson; seven grandchildren, Robin R. Littell and husband, Larry, George W. Robertson Jr. and wife, Pam, Eva R. Booth, Greta R. Simmons and husband, Robbie, John Royall Robertson IV, Emily Zammett, and Ivey Zammett; six great-grandchildren, Megan Booth, Rickey Booth Jr., Lauren Littell, George W. Robertson III, Elizabeth A. Robertson, and Robert S. Simmons Jr.; one brother, Powell D. Mitchell; three sisters, Mary M. Gotwald, Dolly M. Porter, and Naomi L. Mitchell; a host of nieces, nephews, devoted friends and caregivers whom she loved to the end. A service of Celebration will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church, 17120 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend Tom Brown officiating. Interment Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church.
