Glenn Powell of Sutherland passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 after suffering a heart attack. A native of Blackstone and graduate of Blackstone College, he was born 13th of thirteen children to the late Richard Luther Powell and Ida Mason Jones. A long-time resident of Colonial Heights before moving to Sutherland in 1988, he had resided at the Dunlop House in recent years. His wife of 25 years was the late Barbara Louise Olgers Powell of Dinwiddie. He is survived by his children, Nancy Rabinowitz and husband, Yaron of Marina Del Rey, California and Richard Powell of Northern Virginia; three grandchildren, Leah, Sara, and Alec; brothers and sisters, Gene Powell, Nan Hardaway, Walter Lee Powell, and Betty Jane Elmore; countless nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and fondly remembered for his kindness, spirit and keenness for strawberries. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011 in Ocran United Methodist Church, 20221 Cox Road, Sutherland, Virginia 23885 with the Reverend Larry House officiating. Interment will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday in Lakeview Cemetery, Blackstone. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
