Granville Gregory (GG) Gwaltney Sr., 89, of Chester, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, September 6, 2012. He was born on October 12, 1922 in Brookneal, Virginia, the son of the late James Thomas and Lucy Daniel Gwaltney. Preceded in death was his wife, Frances Gates Gwaltney; daughter, Kathryn Gwaltney Huffman; and grandson, Matthew Gregory Gwaltney. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James Thomas (JT) Gwaltney Jr. of Petersburg, and John Coleman Gwaltney of Prince George and sisters, Florine G. Williams and Margaret Laurie both of Petersburg. Granville moved to Petersburg, at age 12, where he became a member of West End Baptist Church and accepted the Lord. He later became a member of Chester Baptist Church. He retired from Virginia Power after 37 ½ years of service, and enjoyed helping his children and grandchildren for over 27 years. He is survived by his son, Granville Gregory (Greg) Gwaltney Jr. and wife, Linda of Chesterfield; and daughter, Cynthia Gwaltney Rowe and husband, Gerard of Blounts Creek, North Carolina; grandson, Jonathan Rowe of Atlanta, Georgia; and granddaughter, Katelyn Rowe of Wilmington, North Carolina. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. Lloyd Braswell of Chester Baptist Church presiding. The family will receive friends prior to the service starting at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Gill Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield.
