Grover Brown Jr.

September 12, 1936 — November 5, 2018

Grover Cleveland Brown Jr., 82, went peacefully to be with the Lord, while at home on Monday afternoon, November 5, 2018. Sitting at his side was his loving wife of 54 years, Juanita LaFerne Graham Brown. Grover lived a life devoted to God, full of love, family, giving, and service to his church, neighbors and his country. Grover was the eldest of five children born to Grover Cleveland Brown, Sr. and Ruby Aileen Lovett Brown. He was born on September 12, 1936 and grew up in Spring Hill, Tennessee. A few years after graduating from high school, he joined the U.S. Army. He served as a teletype operator and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Lee, Virginia. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1963. While stationed at Ft. Lee, Grover was baptized into Christ at the Cameron Avenue Church of Christ. As part of this congregation, he met his future wife Juanita Graham. After a few years of dating, they were married in this church on her birthday, April 11, 1964. As a lifelong member of this congregation, Grover served his Lord by serving as a Deacon for over 20 years, maintaining the building, and serving the senior citizens of the congregation. Grover retired from I.E. DuPont in 1993 after over 25 years of service as a machine operator. For many years, he was also a member of DuPont's Fire Brigade. During their marriage, Grover was blessed with four children who survive him. Crystal Abel and husband, Jeff, Kisha Brown both of Chester, Darren Brown of Dinwiddie, and Kendall Brown of West Point. Grandpa LOVED and cherished his grandchildren, Allison Brown (and great-grandson Kingston), Garrett Abel (and girlfriend Jessie Cook) Kimberlyn Abel, and Brandon & Bradley Brown. Additional family members surviving are his brother, Fred Brown (Ruby); sister, Elsie Smithson both residing in Tennessee, brothers-in-law, Buddy Graham, David Graham (Anita), and Ronnie Graham; and sister-in-law, Isabel Cole (Stuart). Touched by his memory include his former daughters-in-law, Anita Brown (and daughter, Brittney and granddaughter, Sofia), Maury Mathis, and Ashley Brown (and daughters, Jayden and Katelyn); as well as future daughter-in-law, Samantha Hoveland (and daughters, Brooke, Ellie, and Paizley). Grover was a family man and leaves numerous nieces and nephews and close family friends to also cherish his memory. Grover was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2011. The family would like to thank Crater Community Hospice for their care over the last two years. We would like to especially thank Tracy and Grace, as well as Amy Peters, for their loving care of Grover, even when times became tough the past six months. We also thank you for the care and friendship you provided our mother during Dad's decline. Dad, we will never forget our memories of playing cards, sitting on the deck in rocking chairs and walking on the beach with you while on vacation, our two family trips to Disney World, you working in your garden, fishing, or playing with our children. God truly blessed us with the most wonderful father and grandfather. We love and miss you. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Cameron Avenue Church of Christ, 601 Cameron Avenue, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Pallbearers for Grover will be chosen from among his nephews.
