Harley "Mike" Edison Hammer, Jr., 73, of Petersburg, VA passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born in Fairmont, Minnesota he was the son of the late Harley Edison Sr. and Viola Mae Larson Hammer. Mike retired from the United States Army as a Chief Warrant Officer and later retired from Civil Service in the Logistical Department from Fort Lee. He is survived by his two daughters, Monica Thorne and husband Harry of Chester and Kristin Hughes and husband, Randy of Star City, Indiana; five grandchildren, McKenzi and Hannah Thorne, McKayla, Emily and Randy Hughes, Jr.; three brothers, Jerry Hammer, Ted Hammer and Alfred Hammer and wife, Jackie; one sister, Stella Winzenburg; a devoted nephew, Korey Hammer and wife, Gail; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Rd., Amelia Court House, VA 23002. The family will receive friends from 5:05 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Rd., Petersburg, VA 23805.
