Harry Laverne Hall Sr., 92, formerly of Colonial Heights, Virginia entered into eternal rest on November 20, 2017 in St. Petersburg, Florida following an extended illness. A native of Gastonia, North Carolina, he was born on October 7, 1925. Following graduation from Roanoke Rapids High School in the Class of 1943, he was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy. He was an employee of Virginia Electric and Power Company (later Dominion Power) for forty-two years, serving in various departments among them transmission and engineering and later a Field Construction Supervisor. He married Sylvia Rose Higgins of Roanoke Rapids on July 6, 1946, and they spent sixty-nine years together before her death in 2015. Among the joys of their later years was helping to raise great-granddaughter, Savannah Smith. He was a devoted layman in the Southern Baptist church, devoting countless hours to choral singing, song leading, teaching Sunday School, serving as a deacon and volunteering wherever needed. One of the highlights of his life was serving as Song Leader in evangelistic services during the Crusade of the Americas in South America. He was formerly a member of Gideons International, helping to spread the Word of God throughout the Tri-Cities area and the world. He was a man of prayer and delighted in the study of scripture. He was a passionate audiophile, collecting LPs, cassettes and CDs of sacred music, as well as classics, big bands and holiday favorites and loved to garden and tend his yard. He is most remembered for his sweet tenor voice, particularly his heartfelt rendition of "Sweet Little Jesus Boy." He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights. Following the death of his wife, he moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, here he spent his last days under the loving care of his daughter and son-in-law. Predeceased by his parents and five siblings, he is survived by children, Harry L. Hall Jr. of Chester, Susan H. Frazier (Jim) of St. Petersburg, Florida and Timothy L. Hall (Damon L. Fowler) of Savannah, Georgia; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
