Harry Burns Hargis Jr., 73, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012. He was the son of the late Frances Cocke Hargis and Harry Burns Hargis Sr. He was preceded in death by a son, Harry Whitfield Hargis; grandson, Vaughn Whitfield Hargis; and a sister, Joanne H. Padgett. He was a member of St Michael's Episcopal Church in Colonial Heights. Mr. Hargis retired in 1999 after 31 years of service from the Virginia Governor's Office of Economics and Development as a Business Assistance Officer. He attended Roanoke College, and served four years in the United States Marine Corp Reserves. Harry was very active and involved in the community, serving on various boards and services, including the John Tyler Community College Board, Chairman of the Colonial Heights Planning Commission, Wetlands Board, Office of Elections, Historical Society, a member of the Sentinel volunteers with the Colonial Heights Police Department, and the Citizens Police Association. Harry loved golf, reading and traveling. During the winter months his travels took him to Florida, and in the summer time, up north to New Jersey and Rhode Island. Mr. Hargis is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy "Hookie" Dobyns Hargis; sons, William A. Hargis and wife, Kirsten of Winchester, Charles L. Hargis and wife, Gretchen of Kitty Hawk, N.C. ; grandchildren, Eric L. Wilhelm, Raye Ann Hargis, Lachlan B. Hargis, Grace Hargis, Tracy Hargis, Sarah Hargis, Keirry Hargis, Ty Hargis and Rives Hargis; three nieces, Susan Wood, Deborah Witt, Brenda Nichols; and a nephew, Eddie Padgett. A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 13, 2012, in the Colonial Heights chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory 2033 Boulevard, with the Reverend Ron Tignor officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
