Harry Irving Whelan, 89, passed away at his home on Saturday, November 25, 2017. Born to the late James Irving Whelan and Alma Jackson (Big), Harry is also preceded in death by two sons, Harry Irving Whelan, III., and James Rodney Whelan. Harry served his country proudly as a Navy Machinists Mate during the Korean War. He worked as an automotive instructor for a federal penitentiary, in civil service on Fort Lee, Virginia, was then transferred to Aberdeen, Maryland, was the owner and operator of Whelbilt Construction in Petersburg, and was employed by the city of Colonial Heights as the Director of Utilities for over 20 years. Harry was also a devout Catholic, having attended St. Joseph Catholic Church for his entire life up until he moved to Colonial Heights, where he began attending St. Ann Catholic Church for over 30 years. He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Barbara Wilson Whelan; his sons, Kevin and Paul Whelan; his sisters, Iris Martin and Joyce Hartsell and her husband, Ray; his grandchildren, Carly, Beau, Adam, Jayme, Jacob, and Irving Whelan, IV.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church in Colonial Heights on Friday, December 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Danny Cogut as Celebrant and with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park 2901 W. Hundred Rd. Chester, Virginia 23831. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Harry's memory.
