Hartwell Berry

September 6, 1923 — August 14, 2013

Hartwell P. "Dick" Berry, 89, of Chester passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Southside Regional Medical Center. A native of Petersburg, he was the son of the late Jesse and Eugenia Phillips Berry. He was preceded in death by his grandson, James E. "Tripp" Russell III; four brothers, Jesse Berry Jr., Branch Berry, Hunter Berry and Eugene Berry; and a sister, Lois Kirkland. Mr. Berry served in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII, and was a retired meat manager for A&P Supermarket. He was a member of the former High Street United Methodist Church, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Arie #882, and a charter member of the Colonial Heights Sportsman's Club. He is survived by his wife, Thelma P. Berry; a daughter, Judith B. Russell and husband, Jim all of Colonial Heights; numerous nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Mildred Croxton. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with Chaplain Craig Buxton officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
