Hazel Elder Merhout, 78, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Lucy Corr Village. Born in Chesterfield County, she was the daughter of the late William and Lottie Miles Elder, and was preceded in death by two brothers. Mrs. Merhout was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Colonial Heights. She is survived by her husband, James M. Merhout; her children, David L. Johnson and wife, Sherry of Chesterfield, Gwen Rush and husband Mike of Matoaca, and Terry E. Johnson and wife, Jenny of Florida; her step-children, Jeffrey W. Merhout and wife, Michaux of Ohio, and Andrew S. Merhout of Prince George; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Frank Elder; five sisters, Bernice Bennett, Emily Shell, Virginia Moorman, Jean Vinson, and June Williams and husband, Earl. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. John Mason officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060.
