Hearl Lockhart

Hearl Edward (Hal) Lockhart passed away at his home in Petersburg, Virginia on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at the age of 82. Born on April 9, 1936 in Huntington, West Virginia, he was the only child of Roy and Irene Bradshaw Lockhart. Hal is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Holloman Lockhart; a son, Mark Lockhart (Frances) of Katy, Texas; two daughters, Sherry Nickels (Tom) of Katy, Texas, Brenda Clymer (Bill) of Richmond, Virginia; two step-daughters, Lori Scherr of Houston, Texas and Sharon O'Connell (Sean) of Alexandria, Virginia. He is also survived by grandchildren, Ryan Nickels (Kristy), Shelly Garza (Eric), Ian, Duncan, Robin and Zoey Lockhart, Billy and Bobby Clymer, Jessica Garland (Doug), Cory and Alyssa Scherr, Kelly and Chase O'Connell, Stephanie Stanley (Charley) and Rebecca McCown (Chad); and great-grandchildren, Alex and Benjamin Garza, Mattie and Taylor Nickels, Cade and Cole Stanley, Haven, Giana and Trinity Garland, Braylen Lance and Kaleb McCown. Hal was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Janet Stacy, a son, Scott, and a step-daughter, JoEllen. Hal's passion in life was coaching football. After graduating from Marshall University in 1958, he began his coaching career in Iaeger, West Virginia. He then went on to coach in Crum, West Virginia; West Liberty, Pikeville, Corbin, and Vanceburg, Kentucky; Ironton, Ohio; and Louisa and Suffolk, Virginia. He was named Coach of the Year in 1960, 1965, 1966, 1973 and 1984 in his respective high school areas. After retiring from coaching high school football, Hal was the defensive coordinator for the semi-professional football team, the Richmond Ravens. The following year, he was named the head coach of the Ravens. Hal and Mary took over ownership of the team in 1987 and changed the name to the Virginia Ravens. During his 25 years as the owner and head coach, the Ravens were 4-time MDFL League Champions, 4-time Conference Champions, 6-time Division Champions, 2-time EFA National Champions Runner-Up and the EFA National Champions in 2004. Hal was inducted into the American Football Association's Hall of Fame in 1995. In their retirement, Hal and Mary were able to travel to six of the seven continents, visiting over 20 countries and National Parks. Hal may be best remembered by many for his homemade rolls and bread. His children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren will have fond memories of learning to roll out bread dough with Grandpa Bobo. Hal's rolls were much requested by the Thursday Lunch Bunch at Washington Street Methodist Church. A special thanks to the staff at Aseracare Hospice for the excellent care of Hal during his time of need. The family will receive friends Thursday night, August 30, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Crater Road Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road Petersburg, Virginia 23805. A funeral service will be held in the chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018, with Pastor Tom Lester officiating. A graveside service will be conducted by Bishop Sean O'Connell at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018 in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, 459 Noll Drive, Harrisonburg, VA 22802.
