Helen Simmons

June 22, 1918 — March 15, 2014

Helen Seay Simmons, 95, of Matoaca, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Southside Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Matoaca, she was the daughter of the late Linwood E. and Anna Potts Seay. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Simmons; a grandson, Thomas F. Simmons II; a brother, Thomas P. Seay; and a sister, Lois Seay Hatton. Helen was a faithful servant of God and her church for many years. She was a member of Matoaca Baptist Church her entire life. She served there in many capacities, but her most rewarding was being a Sunday school teacher for the five-year-old class for over 25 years. She also spent many hours bringing joy to the congregation by serving on the kitchen and flower ministries for the church. Helen and Harry enjoyed traveling after Harry's retirement and traveled to many places including Hawaii, Orlando, Nova Scotia, Kentucky and numerous bus trips with their Matoaca friends. However, her most precious times were spent with her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who adored her children and grandchildren and the time she spent with them. Helen was a wonderful cook and many people enjoyed her gift. Sunday family lunches were important to her, and she cooked many delicious meals where wonderful memories were made with the family sitting at her dining room table. Her final days at home were cherished when sitting on the back porch enjoying her flowers and hummingbirds. It was always a special time when friends and family visited. Her loving heart, boundless compassion, and never ending devotion will be missed by all those who knew her best. Until we meet again, Grandma - when the roll is called up yonder we'll see you there. Helen is survived by her sons, Preston R. (Ranny) Simmons and wife, Gloria and William F. (Bill) Simmons and wife, Eileen all of Sutherland; grandchildren, Heather Simmons Viar and husband, Kenny, Richard F. Simmons and wife, Chelsi, and Jenna Simmons Bacon and husband, Chris; great-grandchildren, Berkley C. Simmons; Harry F. Simmons II, Kenslee G. Viar, and Brantley F. Simmons; numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with the Reverend Donald Joyner officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Matoaca Baptist Church, 6409 River Road, S. Chesterfield, Virginia 23803. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
