Herta Shepherd

Mrs. Herta Paula Shepherd, 71, of Colonial Heights, departed this life on February 22, 2009. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany on April 5, 1937, and came to the United States on February 14, 1955. Paula is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 54 years, Ret. Sergeant Major Earl F. Shepherd; children, Karen L. Efird and husband, Fred of Colonial Heights, Debi K. Shepherd of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shirley A. Jorge and husband Freddie of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Steve M. Shepherd of Vacaville, California; nine grandchildren who called her " Nanny" or "Oma", Sommer and Bret Efird, Catherine and Tony Jorge, Erika, Lindsay and Zachary Smith, Ciera and Austin Shepherd; four great-grandchildren, Mark, Noah, and Carmen, (children of Tony Jorge, and wife Katrina), and Delilah (daughter of Catherine Jorge); two sisters, Inge Worner, and Ursula Ketterle, of West Germany; nephew, Peter Worner, and wife Birgit of Calw, West Germany, and loving cat, Stella. She was a former member of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church and most recently an attendee at Fort Lee Main Post Chapel. She was a member of the National Association of Military Retirees. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 27, 2009 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulvard, with Reverend Jim Pfost officiating. Burial will take place on Friday 3:00 p.m. at Amelia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, Virginia 23003.
