Howard Parrish Jr.

Howard Louis Parrish, Jr., 94, of Petersburg, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Waverly Health Care Center. He was born October 3, 1920 in Petersburg, Virginia to the late Howard L. Parrish Sr. and Gertrude Allen Parrish and was preceded in death by his wife, Inez C. Parrish. Mr. Parrish was a graduate of Petersburg High School and the Richmond Diesel Engine School. He was a member of the Powhatan Stark # 124 AF & AM, Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter 7, Scottish Rite Temple, and a member of the American Legion Post 284. He was also an active member of St. John Episcopal Church in Petersburg, where he was a trustee as well as a Senior and Junior Wardens. Mr. Parrish was a member of the Contracting Company of Parrish and Sons Plastering Contractors and retired after twenty years from Fort Lee Post Engineers as the manager of Buildings and Ground Maintenance. He is survived by two sons, Howard L. ("H.L.") Parrish III, and wife, Janet Morris Parrish of Deltaville, Virginia, R. Craig Parrish and wife, Linda Livesay Parrish, of Prince George; three grandchildren, Lindsey Parrish Guirges of Richmond, Matthew C. Parrish of Richmond, and Morgan Parrish Sawyer of Chesterfield; two great-granddaughters, Emerson Inez Guirges and Sarah Grace Sawyer. A funeral service will take place 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 in St John's Episcopal Church, 842 W. Washington St. Petersburg, Virginia, 23803, with Reverend D. Richard Greenwood III officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg. The family will receive friends Monday January 12, 2015 from 7-8:30 p.m. the Colonial Heights chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, c/o ACCA Temple Shrine, 1712 Bellevue Avenue, Richmond, VA 23227 or St. John's Episcopal Church,. 842 W. Washington St. Petersburg, Virginia, 23803.
