"Time and Tide Wait for No Man" TAPS: SARGEANT FIRST CLASS RETIRED HUGH P. BEAGLE JR. ("Daddy" "Sonny" "Herb") 80, answered his final bugle call on September 17, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He had fought a brave battle with his most formidable enemy - cancer - for the past several months but had to surrender. He is now a member of Heaven's Army. REVEILLE: Hugh was born in Stanton, Virginia on December 1, 1932 to Hugh Preston Beagle Sr. and Pearl Mae Kale Beagle. He enjoyed an idyllic small-town childhood, and he spoke fondly of attending Saturday matinees and his first job as a caddy at the Stanton Country Club. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, he worked for the railroad on postal cars and attended business school where he studied accounting. ASSEMBLY: Hugh's greatest calling was service to the UNITED STATES ARMY. He served 26 years in the ARMY, working at many posts as an administrative specialist clerk typist, and administrative supervisor. Some of his assignments included the 293rd Engineer Battalion, the A.G. Staff Message Control Center, the Petroleum & Field Service Department of the Army U.S. Quartermaster School, and Army Community Service Center in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served in the Korean War, and served a tour of duty during the Vietnam War as part of the U.S. Army Civil Military Operations Division. He earned many decorations and honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and 6 Good Conduct awards. During Hugh's time stationed in Fort Monroe, Virginia, he met and married his devoted wife, Marilyn W. Beagle. Out of their union came two daughters, Brenda J. Beagle and Beth A. Beagle. RETREAT: Hugh retired from the U.S. Army after being stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia in 1979. He settled his family in Petersburg, where he and Marilyn raised their daughters. He then worked for the U.S. Census Bureau before taking a position as an administrative clerk for National Business Service Enterprises, a food service contractor in Fort Lee, Virginia until he retired in 2001. Hugh enjoyed many hobbies, including stamp collecting, crossword puzzles, following sports and NASCAR racing ,reading about U.S. and European military history, playing with his pet cats, and amusing those around him with his unique and funny "songs" only he could compose! Hugh will be greatly missed by his wife, Marilyn; his devoted daughters, Brenda and Beth; as well as a "daughter of his heart" family friend, Tabitha Battle, and his cat, Misty. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Beagle Sr. and Pearl Mae Kale; as well as three "feline friends," April, Coco, and Angel-Muffin. Final Bugle Call: A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, September 23, 2013 in Southlawn Memorial Park Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 22, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road.
