Irene Currin Barnes, 94, of Colonial Heights passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018 at the Laurels of Willow Creek. She was a native of Wallasey Cheshire, England, daughter of the late William and Alice Davies Currin, and was also preceded in death by her loving husband, John Joseph Barnes; daughter, Wendy Barnes; two brothers and one sister. She was a resident of Colonial Heights for 61 years, but for the past 4 years, she resided at the Petersburg Home for Ladies. Mrs. Barnes was a founding member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where she was an active serving member, most notably on the Altar Guild. She was a veteran of WWII as a proud member of the British Woman's Royal Air Force. She was a member of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association (TBPA), Hopewell Branch. Irene was a loving wife, mother and homemaker, as well as a cherished Nana and Big Nana. She is survived by her three daughters, Sandra Barnes Garr (Homer), Linda Barnes Posenau (Jerry), Debra Barnes Cowan (Cecil); 5 grandchildren, Joseph Wells (Aly), Cary Wells (Ashley), Bridget Whittington (Ben), Trevor Posenau (Lauren), Brittany Utter (Billy); 6 great-grandchildren, Jackson Wells, Henry Wells, Austin Wells, Macon Wells, John Posenau, Maggie Dean Wells; and numerous devoted nieces, nephews, and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 501 Old Town Drive, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834, with the Reverend Donnie Dunn officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church Altar Guild, the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3101 Industrial Dr #210, Raleigh, NC 27609, or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 5540 Falmouth St #101, Richmond, VA 23230.
