Isom E. Hubble of Chester, Virginia, transitioned from this life into Eternity on July 21, 2020. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, of a very brief illness caused by cancer.
Isom was born July 29, 1935 in Marion, Virginia. He grew up, with his two siblings, on the family farm in the area called Stony Battery west of Marion near the South Fork of the Holston River. Isom graduated from Sugar Grove High School and began his working career with the Marion Dry Cleaning Company. He married Loretta Crewey Hubble of Atkins in 1954. Later, he joined his father-in-law’s painting company until relocating to Petersburg, Virginia in 1961. There, he took a job on a Surveying Team for what was then known as the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation (now VDOT).
Among his VDOT colleagues, Isom was known as “Ike.” Across a career of three decades, his work in surveying and inspecting led him to walk the length of I-85 to the North Carolina border, most of I-64 in Virginia and other major roads. In the last few years with VDOT, he worked as a draftsman in the VDOT Central Office in Richmond.
During this period, he moved his family across the Appomattox River to Colonial Heights, and finally, to the Chester area. Isom retired from VDOT in the 1990’s, he then picked up a new career in retail with some of the local clothing stores. Finally, his last employment with Ukrop’s and Martin’s grocery stores lasted yet another 20+ years.
Isom and his wife, Loretta, were active and involved in the church throughout their lives. One of his greatest gifts was singing, and he exercised that talent singing in a Southern Gospel Quarter starting as a teenager. Participation in the quartets was his testimony to his belief in Jesus Christ and his personal passion for sharing the Good News.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Edgar and Luella Sturgill Hubble; and his brother, Marvin Jay Hubble, all of Marion, Virginia. Isom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Loretta Crewey Hubble of Chester; son, Preston Hubble (Debbie) of Durham, NC; sister, Monica Dale Kenney of Roanoke; grandchildren, Adam Hubble (Christy) of Powhatan and Tory Leigh Rogers (Patrick) of Chester; five great-grandchildren, Colby Vaughn Hubble, Ashlyn Summerlin Hubble, Madelyn Grace Rogers, Coulson Jonathan Hubble, and Tyler Dean Rogers; nephews, Joseph Hubble (Sue) of Salem, Jody Kenney of Roanoke, and Jonathan Crewey (Jennifer) of Atkins; nieces, Vickie Crewey Blevins (Robert) & Carmen Young, both of Bristol, Tennessee, Sue Hubble Hansel (Steven) of Marion, and Lisa Kenney Smith (Keith) of Spotsylvania.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27, 2020 at The Heights Baptist Church, 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, S. Chesterfield, Virginia 23834, officiated by Pastor Randy Hahn.
