James Renwick Alter Sr., 94, of Disputanta passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021. Born June 11, 1926, he was the son of the late Samuel Elwood and Helen Johnston Alter and was also preceded in death by his wife, Anneliese Alter; daughters, Lolly Gilmore, Lizabeth “Sissy” Alter and sons, Alan Alter and Samuel “Buddy” Alter. James retired from the United States Army after a dedicated 21-year career, having served during World War II and the Vietnam War. He received many awards for his service, which include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge, Occupation Medal – Germany, EAME Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge and the Victory Medal. He is survived by his son, James “Jimmy” Alter (Kathy); daughter, Kris Franchok (Paul); daughter-in-law, Dale Alter; grandchildren, Travis Wolfrey (Miranda), Lynwood Collier (Bridget), Tonya Kerns, Aliese Alter (Sara), Emma Pryor (Jacob), Hannah Alter, Jacob Alter, Jessica Mitchell (Donnie), Leanne Crouch (Seth) and Dustin and Brandon Franchok and many beloved great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
