James Wesley Crummett, 83, of Prince George County, went to play in the Lord's heavenly orchestra on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Richmond, he was the son of the late, Silas Berlin Crummett and Helen Ivey Crummett, and was preceded in death by his sister, Marion Gay Bunner. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. Following an honorable discharge from the Army, he pursued his calling, earning a degree in music education from VCU. After college, he worked as a professional musician and taught band in the public schools of Richmond, Prince George, and Dinwiddie. He formed a trombone choir, which performed and played for the Virginia Beach Jazz Festival. He also received awards as best Jazz musician and best Jazz group in Richmond. He was a member of Local 123 Musicians Union and his life was full of music, playing for many Broadway Shows, Theatre groups, orchestras, bands (big band sound), ensembles - music for every occasion. He also loved to play golf and was a Redskins fan. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church where he played joyfully for the Lord in the church orchestra. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Martin Crummett; two sons, Karl M. Crummett, and David W. Crummett and his wife, Angela and their three children; Wesley, Corey, and Amy. Also, he is survived by his new great-granddaughter, Autumn Elizabeth, daughter of Corey and Christopher Clevenger. Additionally, he is survived by his niece, Kelly Lee McCrone, and his grand doggie, Katie. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Dr. Randall T. Hahn officiating. Entombment Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Colonial Heights Baptist Church, Music Ministry, 17201 Jefferson Davis Highway, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
