James Francis Carter, 79, of Chester, passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023. He was born on January 15, 1944 in Grifton, North Carolina to the late Emmett Carter and Susan Ellen Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Bradshaw Carter and by just a few days of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bradshaw. James graduated from Grifton High School in 1961 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1964. He served as crew chief on C-130 Hercules aircraft and was also a veteran of the Vietnam War. After four and a half years of military service, James went to work for Dupont for twenty-five years, and had a second career in Heating and Air. He is survived by his sons, Christopher James Carter of N. Chesterfield, and Jonathan Allan Carter of Chester; his brother, Donald B. Carter and wife, Kathy of Midlothian; his sister, Judy Sheridan and husband, Donald of Wilmington, North Carolina; brother in-law, James Bradshaw and wife, Mary of Sumter, South Carolina; and several nieces and a nephew. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023 at St. John’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, 2000 Canon Price Road Grifton, North Carolina 28530. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
