James Edward (Mike) Mayton Jr., 79 years old, born April 13, 1932 in Brunswick County, Virginia departed this life July 9, 2011 after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, James E. Mayton Sr. and Alice Lewis Mayton, two brothers and three sisters. As a young man, he was a tobacco farmer in McKenney. Mr. Mayton was a veteran of the Korean War from 1952 to 1954 and received 3 bronze stars. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce Ann Atkins Mayton of 56 years; two sons, Dennis E. Mayton and wife, Carol of Colonial Heights, James E. Mayton III and wife, Vickie of Colonial Heights; two daughters, Brenda Marker and fiancé, Mark Ayscue of Colonial Heights and Debra Rose and fiancé, Curtis Lamb of Stella, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Lemons of Matoaca; and his two companion dogs, Mary Jane and Buddy. The family would like to thank the nursing attendants at Care Advantage who provided kindness and assistance for their many years of service. Thanks also to the staff at Chippenham Hospital for their care and thoughtfulness during his final days. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2011 in Manson United Methodist Church Cemetery, 17211 Manson Church Road, McKenney, Virginia 23872 with the Reverend Karen Workman officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
