James Walter Miller, 81, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024, with his devoted wife and family by his side. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Charlotte (Kelly) Miller, his children James Walter II (Adrienne Lynn Eoppolo) and Charlotte Michele (David Paul Dempsey); and his grandchildren, Ireland Rose Miller, and Bridget Claire Dempsey. He is also remembered by his sisters, Nellie, Betty, and Patty. Jim joins his predeceased sisters, Vada and Evelyn, brothers Roy and Tommy and his parents, Ethel, and Walter Miller. Born in Milton, West Virginia, on November 1, 1942, Jim dedicated his life to his family and country. A proud veteran, Jim served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, and demonstrating patriotism and commitment during the Vietnam War. He furthered his education earning a B.S. from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from Pepperdine University in HR management. After the military, he served as the Director of Student Affairs at VCU for 17 years. Jim was known for his kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit. His award-winning Christmas light displays at his home brought joy to many. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Colonial Heights, VA and a fourth-degree knight in the Knights of Columbus. To honor Jim’s remarkable life, a funeral mass will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at St. Ann Catholic Church 17111 US Route 1, S. Chesterfield, Virginia 23834. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. A reception will follow immediately after the mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, please honor Jim’s giving spirit by donating to your local food bank. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
