James Lewis Payne, 88, of S. Chesterfield passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021. Born May 23, 1932, he was the son of the late John and Leota Payne, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Iladel Esther Payne; son, Daniel Louis Payne; and seven siblings. James was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist in Petersburg. After a dedicated 20-year career, he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer from the United States Army. He then went on to become an insurance agent for Life of Georgia and Geico, then became an independent broker, retiring after 34 years. He put on a yearly golf tournament fundraiser for juvenile diabetes and was also an assistant scout master for the Boy Scouts Troop 162. He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Alan Dale Payne; two grandchildren, Melissa Suyes and husband, Brian, Kevin Louis Payne and wife, Janice; four great-grandchildren, London and Nolan Suyes, James and Kendal Payne; five siblings, Bill Payne and wife, Clara, Delbert Payne, Donnie Payne and wife, Nancy, Sue Rice, Snooky Garrett and husband, Lanney; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2021 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Bermuda Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
