James Alton Pond, 77, of Colonial Heights, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Henderson and Myra Collins Pond; a sister, Janice P. Perkins; and a brother-in-law, George F. Perkins. Mr. Pond is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Jeanie C. Pond; his son, Jeffrey C. Pond and wife, Laura; two granddaughters, Teagan Marie Pond and Riley Ann Pond who were the light of his life; a niece, Whitney P. Huff; nephew, Paul P. Perkins and wife, Clair; three great-nieces, Britney Huff, Shelby Huff and Sydney Perkins; two great-nephews, Clayton Huff and Grant Perkins; and a number of beloved and treasured cousins. He is also survived by his faithful friends and caregivers, Sandy Walter and Nancy Johnson. Jim was a graduate of Petersburg High School, excelling in football and baseball, and later completed several courses at Richard Bland College. He served his country in the United States Air Force and returned to Colonial Heights to begin his career in law enforcement, beginning as a dispatcher for the Colonial Heights Police Department. He worked his way up the ranks during his 18 years, starting as a patrolman and later becoming a Detective Sergeant working as a Juvenile and Safety Officer, and later serving on the Tri-City Area Drug Task Force. He then ran for Sheriff in 1977, and became the second Sheriff of the City of Colonial Heights, taking office in 1978, and retiring 18 years later in 1996. Jim Pond at the age of 27, was honored by the Colonial Heights Jaycees with the Distinguished Service Award and named Outstanding Young Man of the Year in January of 1966. He was the 1970 recipient of a national award, the Law and Order Medal with certificate given by the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. This was the second year this award was given. The first was presented to J. Edgar Hoover of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Jim was an active member of the Colonial Heights Kiwanis Club for a number of years, being named Outstanding Kiwanian of the Year 1979-1980, and served as President of the organization from 1981-1982. He also served as the first chairman of the Planning Committee for the Riverside Regional Jail Authority. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, having been active in the past, serving as a Deacon and in several other capacities. His years on this earth are exemplified by his commitment, service and loyalty to his family, friends, community and country. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016 at Second Baptist Church, 3355 Johnson Rd., Petersburg, VA with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Lewis, officiating. Interment will follow in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Second Baptist Church or the Colonial Heights Fire & EMS.
