James Simmons

James Warren Simmons, 88, of Matoaca, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born in Matoaca, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Mary Elizabeth Timmons Simmons. Mr. Simmons was a member and past Treasurer of Matoaca United Methodist Church. He was a veteran with the United States Army having served during World War II, in the European Theater, under General George Patton, a member of the Ettrick American Legion Post #136, an honorary member of the Matoaca Fire Department, and previously Fire Chief. Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances K. Simmons; a brother, Robert S. Simmons of Matoaca; nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2011 in the Matoaca United Methodist Church, 6301 River Road, Petersburg, Virginia 23803 with the Reverend Jo Ellen Hetherington officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with military honors. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Matoaca United Methodist Church. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
