James Douglas Smith, 92 went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 9, 2013. Born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, he was the son of Elinor G. and James Rosser Smith. He graduated from Petersburg High School and enrolled in VPI before enlisting in the Army. After the war, he returned to Virginia Tech, where he was an officer in The German Club. He was married to Anne Perkinson Martin, who preceded him in 1990. He was retired from Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, where he worked for thirty years in accounting. He was active at Tabb Street Presbyterian Church, serving as Superintendent of Sunday School and Clerk of the Session, the latter for thirty-five years; and presently at New Venture Christian Fellowship. Jim was an officer and active volunteer in the finance office of the American Legion Post 284 for many years after his retirement. He was an officer and active participant in the Colonial Heights Senior Golf Association, a member of (POGO) Petersburg Old Geezers Organization). He is survived by a son, James Doulas Smith, Jr. and wife Ann, of Colonial Heights; daughter Anne Martin "Marty" Smith Thornhill and husband Scott, of Richmond; four grandchildren, Nicole Burgess Smith of Lynchburg, Ian Douglas Smith and wife Tricia of Lynchburg, John Dillard Thornhill of Alexandria, and Henry Douglas Thornhill of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Eli Douglas Smith and Connor Jay Smith; long-time friend, Carolyn Isaacs. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, Virginia followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 12, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with an American Legion service at 5:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
