SSG James Vacek, USA (Ret.), 91, of Prince George, passed away on Monday, May 19, 2014 at his residence. Born in Schulenburg, Texas, he was the son of the late John and Mary Stuckly Vacek. Mr. Vacek retired from the United States Army, was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284 for 22 years, the Hopewell Moose for 49 years, and a lifelong member of the Blackwater Hunt Club, Prince George. He retired after 25 years as a Greens Superintendent from the Cardinal Club Golf Course at Fort Lee. Mr. Vacek enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gertrud Vacek; a son, Gene Vacek and wife, Cathy of Prince George; a brother, L. J. Vacek and wife, Frances; a sister-in-law, Mary Vacek; and numerous nieces and nephews all of Schulenburg, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Entombment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, with military honors. An American Legion service will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014 with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
