James Fred Wellons Jr. passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012. James was born in Johnson County, North Carolina on October 3, 1923, and was the son of James Fred and Annie D. Wellons. He was a proud graduate of North Carolina State University in Agricultural Engineering. Like many of his generation, he served in WWII and has fond memories of England as a member of the Army Medical Core. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, from the mid 1960's to the present. James was preceded in death by his wife, Elva Phillips Wellons. He is survived by his sister, Norma Blevins of New Bern, North Carolina; daughter, Catherine Buttrill of Yorktown, Virginia; son, Stephen Wellons of Bellevue, Washington; grandson, Scott Buttrill of California, Maryland; grandson, Christopher Wellons and granddaughter, Lynn Healey both of Tucson, Arizona. James retired from VEPCO (now Dominion Resources) in 1988 following 38 years with the company, where he began his career as an Agricultural Engineer. As someone who loved driving and had an unerring sense of navigation, he was a perfect match with his job, that of driving all over Virginia and North Carolina explaining to farmers how electricity could make their farms more productive by the use of electrification. His career eventually migrated into a career performing rates and billing responsibilities at their headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. He was a constant source of corny jokes. He enjoyed people and they enjoyed him. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2012 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, please provide a donation to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, Virginia 23060. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
