James Newton "Jimmie" Wood, 84, of Petersburg, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born in Moseley, Virginia he was the son of the late James Ira and Elma Meredith Wood, and was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Harrison Wood. Mr. Wood was a veteran with the United States Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired Assistant to the President of the International Typographical Union, a former Union Negotiator across the U.S., and a prior printer at the Progress Index Newspaper. Mr. Wood is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Wood Stewart and husband, Michael Stewart of Prince George, and Deborah Wood Shuman and husband, Randy Shuman of Phoenix, Arizona; a grandson, Matthew Corey Stewart and wife, Sarah Stewart of Prince George; and a brother, Robert Wood of Colonial Heights. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George with the Reverend Robert Lane officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 3935 S. Crater Road.
