Janie Hasty

December 19, 1926 — July 11, 2014

Janie Bailey Hasty, 87, of Colonial Heights passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Polly Bullock Bailey. Mrs. Hasty was preceded in death her by husbands, William C. Aldridge and Carlton E. Hasty and a step-daughter Carolyn K. Rowe. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Colonial Heights and was retired Civil Service from the Defense General Supply Center in Richmond. Mrs. Hasty is survived by two sons, Carroll W. Aldridge II and wife Shannon Payne of Bon Air, Charles E. Hasty and wife Betsy P. Hasty of Midlothian; step-son, Harvey L. Hasty and wife, Sharon of Suffolk; step-daughter, Barbara Chesher of Colonial Heights; five grandchildren, Selina, Margaret, Rebecca, Noa and Ron; two great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry Bailey of North Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews. Janie grew up on a tobacco farm in the rich farm land of Martin County in eastern North Carolina. Upon graduation from Robersonville High School, she proceeded to relocate to Norfolk, Virginia. There she met and married Mr. William C. Aldridge. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1960. From there, Janie relocated to the greater Richmond area to begin a long, happy career at the Defense Supply Center, now DLA-Aviation/Richmond. During her tenure, there she met Carlton E. Hasty. They were married in 1965 until his death in 2002. Janie Hasty was a loving and devoted mother to her two sons, one from each marriage. At times, a sharp wit and lively conversationalist, she enjoyed companionship, family life and her girlfriends. Strong willed and rarely a quitter, she often replied to various circumstances with, "life is what you make of it." Such pragmatism helped define her character. A regular church attendee before declining health stole her vigor, she continued to be active as best as she could. By those who know her, she will be missed. To those who were her friends, she was always faithful. As a mother, she was always there for my brother and myself to the very end. A funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Boulevard 23834 with the Reverend Fred Adkins officiating. Burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8:30P.M. at the funeral home. Flowers, are welcome or contributions may be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church, 620 Lafayette Ave Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.
