Jay Deboer

Jay Junior DeBoer of Sutherland, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2017, after a period of declining health. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on June 21, 1923 to the late Gerrit and Sarah Brace DeBoer and was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Pastoor DeBoer; son, James William DeBoer; grandson, Jay Christopher DeBoer; and brother, Julius "Jack" DeBoer. He was a WWII veteran where he flew B25 Bombers and was shot down in Italy for which he received the Purple Heart. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Oklahoma A & M. After working several years in Baltimore, MD, he moved to Colonial Heights, VA to join his father and brother at Community Paint and Hardware. He later established Community Sporting Goods where he worked until his retirement in 1986. In Colonial Heights, he was a Past President of the Optimist Club but also served in other civic organizations. He is also a member of American Legion, Post 284. Jay loved golf which was highlighted by his trip to Scotland with his buddies where he played Royal St. Andrews. Jay is survived by his sons, Joe DeBoer and wife, Janie of Colonial Heights, and Jon DeBoer and wife, Natalie of Richmond; three granddaughters, Leigh Anne DeBoer Boisseau, Beth DeBoer Dillard, and Sarah DeBoer Dickson; three grandsons, Jeffrey S. DeBoer, Steven C. DeBoer and William C. DeBoer; six great-granddaughters, Abby, Lauren, Kayleigh, Riley, Ella and Ursula; his sister, Carolyn DeBoer Curtis of Colonial Heights; his nephews, Jay Wayne DeBoer of Richmond, Dave DeBoer of Chesterfield; and his niece, Diane DeBoer Corrigan of Colonial Heights. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2017, at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, VA 23834. Funeral Services will be private.
