J.C. Smith Jr.

J. C. Smith Jr., 87, of Chesterfield, passed away on Friday, July 5, 2013. Born in Mississippi, he was the son of the late John C. Smith Sr. and Virder Mae West Smith. J.C. was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years and the mother of his children, Joyce H. Smith, and his second wife, Sarah P. Smith. He was a dedicated member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and the choir, having the church life center named in his honor. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Laurel Chapter #126 in Mississippi, City Council and Lions Club in Archdale, North Carolina, and the Colonial Heights Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 9 years, Shirley R. Smith; children, Freddie Carr and husband, Bobby of Brandon, Mississippi, Gwen Moseley and husband, Ronnie of Colonial Heights, Lynn Nugent and husband, Lennie of Colonial Heights, and Tim Smith and wife, Debbie of S. Chesterfield; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 in Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 9227 River Road, S. Chesterfield, Virginia, 23803 with the Reverend Michelle Edmonds Lindsey officiating. Interment will follow in East Matoaca Cemetery, Matoaca, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 8, 2013, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning at church.
