Jesse Edward Avery, 89, of Colonial Heights, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 11, 1925 in Chesterfield County, to the late John William and Indiania Hargrave Avery. Mr. Avery was a United States Army World War II Veteran. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administration Board, the Head Usher and the United Methodist Men's group, Morning Star Class, and Worship Committee. He loved ringing the church bell and helping the children do so. Additionally, he enjoyed volunteering as a greeter at the Fort Clifton Festival, gardening and collecting Jeff Gordon and DuPont memorabilia. Mr. Avery retired after 42 years of service from DuPont. Mr. Avery is survived by his wife, Eleanor Avery; daughter, Amy Crafton of Colonial Heights; grandson, Douglas R. "Dougie" Jackson III., of Colonial Heights; one brother, Marvin Avery of Chesterfield. A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014 in Highland United Methodist Church, 125 E Westover Ave, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with the Reverend Dr. Dorothy O' Quinn and the Reverend William Rawlings officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 23, 2014 from 6:30 p.m.to 8:00 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E.
