Jewell Newsome West

Jewell Newsome West, 82, of Dinwiddie County, VA, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Born in Rocky Mount, NC, on July 1, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Henry Clay and Annie Bell Thomas Newsome. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carlton R. West, whom she married on December 30, 1961; and five siblings. 

She is survived by her loving children, Jeffrey West-Armistead (Rebecca) of North Chesterfield, VA, and Kimberly Eanes (Mark) of Lynchburg, VA; grandchildren, Nicholas West of Morgantown, WV, Erica Mitchell (Lee) of Mechanicsville, VA, and Olivia Eanes of Lynchburg, VA; great-grandchildren, Madeline and Amelia; brother, Madison Newsome (Nit) of Wilmington, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Jewell grew up and worked on her family’s cotton and tobacco farm in Edgecombe County, NC during her childhood. She graduated from West Edgecombe High School in 1960, and later earned her Associates degree in accounting from Wilson Community College in 1975. She worked as a full charge bookkeeper at several dealerships in Wilson, NC, Richmond, VA, and Chester, VA. Afterwards, she became VP of Forest Hill Associates of Richmond in 1987, retiring in 2006. Jewell was a former Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star in Stantonsburg, NC, and was also an active member in the Woman of the Moose of Dinwiddie Moose Lodge. 

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Crater Road Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes, 3935 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23805. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral for a visitation. Entombment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, S. Prince George, VA.
