Jimmy Ollyen Shively, 82, of Chesterfield and Ferrum, Virginia died June 30, 2019. A native of Virginia, he was born on January 30, 1937 in Endicott. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou (Minucie); brother, Rodney Shively of Ferrum; and parents, Kermit and Geneva Shively of Ferrum. Jim (as he was known to all his friends and family) was the consummate storyteller. He could turn the most mundane event into a 10-minute story and phone calls would average at least an hour…on a good day. As a natural born outdoorsman, he loved the mountains of Virginia and hunted and fished throughout his life. Jim was also a professional archer, winning numerous archery tournaments throughout the years and always loved a good round of golf. For a few years in his 20s, he played professional baseball with the Des Moines (Iowa) Demons, a Minor League Team (farm team of the Philadelphia Phillies) as a left-handed pitcher. Jim lived a fulfilling life and his story telling will be greatly missed. His sons swear they hear him now from above saying, “Now, let me tell you what you need to do…” He was the beloved father to his sons, Jimmy Dale Shively (Rebecca) of Texas, Randolph Kelly Shively (Robin) of Chesterfield and Randall Lee Shively (Karen) of Chesterfield. He is survived by his sister, Margo Brake (Johnnie) of Vinton; brother, Steve Shively of Ferrum; sister-in-law, Judy Shively of Ferrum; sister-in-law, Peggy Hodges of Rocky Mount; numerous nieces and nephews; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount, 665 S. Main Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151. His ashes will be buried with his wife’s at the Endicott Schoolhouse Cemetery. Local funeral arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory 2033 Boulevard Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
