Joe Leo Whitmore, 89, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Born in Webster, Kentucky he was the son of the late Iona and Basil Crawford, and was preceded in death by a son, Larry W. Whitmore. Mr. Whitmore was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, the Men's Bible Class, and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a veteran with the United States Navy, and a retired Civil Service Firefighter at Fort Lee. He was an expert fisherman with many citations, and he loved to garden. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean P. Whitmore; a son, Lee A. Whitmore of Chesterfield; three grandchildren, Carson A. Whitmore of Chesterfield, Sydney-Allen B. Whitmore of Chesterfield, and Jennifer W. Hegwald and husband, Mark of Colonial Heights; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Ashley Hegwald. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard with the Reverend Darwood Rowan and the Reverend Dr. Dorothy O'Quinn officiating. Burial will be private.
