John A. Barger, 84, of Colonial Heights passed away on Saturday October 7, 2017 at Southside Regional Medical Center. Born December 22, 1932 in Hickory, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Oliver C. and Lottie Belle Hefner Barger, and was also preceded in death by five siblings, and a granddaughter, Lisa Marie Alascio. He was a United States Army veteran and retired as a Maintenance Mechanic from Honeywell. Mr. Barger was a member of the Kress Hill Hunt Club in Brunswick County. He is survived by his wife, Jewel Barger; three daughters, Joan Courson (Steven), Janice Harrelson (David), Cynthia Barger; son, James Barger (Sue); grandchildren, Jennifer K. Marks (Daniel), Jeffrey A. Kitchen (Christy), John H. Turner III (Erica), Dana Rinker (Tommy), Bart James Holschuh II.; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at Chester Baptist Church, 4317 School Street, Chester, Virginia 23831, with the Reverend Dr. Lloyd Braswell officiating. Interment will be at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road Amelia, Virginia 23002. The family will receive friends Wednesday night, October 11, 2017 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
