John Joseph Barnes John Joseph Barnes, 97, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Colonial Heights Health Care Center. He was native of Dinwiddie, the son of the late James William and Nannie Harrison Barnes, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Barnes, two brothers, and four sisters. Mr. Barnes was a charter member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry, and was a Junior Warden. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. as a Staff Sergeant with the 332nd Air Service Squadron, 333rd Group serving in the European Theater. He worked for 35 years with VDOT as a Highway Right of Way Engineer, and was a 51 year member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284, and the Old Hickory Hunt Club in Dinwiddie. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 64 years, Irene Currin Barnes; three daughters, Sandra Barnes Garr and husband, Homer of Prince George, Linda Barnes Posenau and husband, Jerry of Mechanicsville, and Debra Barnes Cowan and husband, Cecil of Exton, Pennsylvania; a cherished "Papa" to his five grandchildren, Joseph W. Wells and wife, Alyson, Cary H. Wells and wife, Ashley, Bridget A. Cowan, J. Trevor Posenau, and Brittany E. Cowan; two great-grandsons, Jackson R. and Henry A. Wells; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 2, 2009 in St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 501 Old Town Drive, Colonial Heights with the Reverend Tige Newell officiating. Following the service there will be a visitation and reception in the parish hall. Inurnment Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia will be held at a later date.
