John Edward Hawkins, age 81, of Chester, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2011. He was born in Dinwiddie County, and was the son of the late Henry Benjamin and Bessie Bain Hawkins. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Jacob Murray Hawkins. John was retired from Stone Container Corporation in Hopewell after 36 years of service. He was a Korean War era veteran of the U. S. Army and served in Germany. He was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department, having contributed greatly to the construction of the current fire house, Company No. 1. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pansy Dean Hawkins; a son, Dean Edward Hawkins and his wife, Brenda Murray Hawkins of Chester; and a daughter, Paige Bain Hawkins Hackney and her husband, Dr. Stephen Andrew Hackney of Houghton, Michigan. To continue his legacy, he is also survived by four fine grandsons, Jonathan David Hawkins of Falls Church, Virginia, Eric Andrew Hackney of Houghton, Michigan, Drew Alexander Hackney of Raleigh, North Carolina and Brian James Hackney of Plymouth, Michigan. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2011 in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. Arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E.
