John Edward Quay Jr. LtCol, USMC (Ret) passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2011. A native of Waco, Texas, he was the son of the late Dr. John E. Quay and Mary Thornburrow Quay. He was a graduate of Baylor University. He joined the United States Marine Corps during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater where he fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the Fourth Marine Division. He served with the First Marine Division in the Korean Conflict. Lt Colonel Quay's last assignment was in Buenos Aires as military advisor to the Argentine Marine Corps. Following his retirement from active duty, he entered his second career as a math teacher in the Prince George County School System at J.E.J. Moore Junior High School. John Quay attended Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284, of the Richmond Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, and of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Cogle Quay and by their daughter, Barbara of Colonial Heights. Also he is survived by his children, Pamela, Mary, John, and Jeffrey, formerly of Neenah, Wisconsin; his brother-in-law R. Jack Cogle and his wife, Beverly of Chester. To commemorate his service to his country a graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in Sunset Memorial Park, 2901 W. Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia 23831. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the grave. In lieu of flowers, tribute to his memory may be expressed to the American Lung Association, 9221 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23235.
