John Wayne Terry died peacefully at his home, surrounded by family, on January 16, 2018, in Colonial Heights, Virginia at the age of 89. John is survived by his wife, Mary Martin Terry; his children, John Wayne Terry, Jr. and wife, Mary of Henrico, Kathleen Terry Lansing and husband, George of Colonial Heights, Laurie Robin Terry Jones and husband, David of Raleigh, North Carolina; three step-sons; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelyn Hawk Terry of Colonial Heights; and daughter, Pamela Kay Terry. John was born on September 25, 1928 in Monticello, Mississippi to John Wesley Terry and Martha Bell Dukes Terry. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry and later a Master's Degree in Business Administration. He married Adelyn Hawk, his college sweetheart, in 1950. They moved to Laurel, Mississippi and he began working for Masonite Corporation as a Chemist. Over the next 12 years, they both mourned the loss of their first child, and were blessed to welcome three children into their home. John was never slow to remind each of his children that they were loved and very special to him. After Adelyn's death, John married Mary Martin Terry, and lived 22 years together in Colonial Heights where they continued to play a role in the lives of their families. John was an accomplished business manager, analytical thinker, and was always eager to learn more about history, his world, and his ancestry. He was a caring, supportive, and generous man who loved spending time with his family. He was an active and dedicated member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Colonial Heights since its founding. A Funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2018 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 3110 Greenwood Avenue, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with Pastor Wayne Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John's life.
