Joseph James Deffely Jr., 86, of Doswell, formally of Colonial Heights, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018. He was born in Newton, Massachusetts to the late Joseph and Edythe Deffely on July 29, 1932. Mr. Deffely was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Colonial Heights and Ashland, Virginia, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a retired insurance agent and retired as a Chief Navy Petty Officer from the United States Navy, having served in Vietnam. Mr. Deffely also served as a volunteer for the Chesapeake Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jean Deffely; and son, William J. Deffely. He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Ann McKay of Hopewell; sons, James Joseph Deffely (Reginia) of Brookline, New Hampshire, Michael T. Deffely (Teresa) of Liberty Center, Ohio, Robert Charles Deffely of Hopewell, and Paul Anthony Deffely (Iris) of Doswell; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Alfred Sullivan), Virginia Connors, Edythe Keaney, Marion Neville, and Kathleen Deffely; brother, Paul Deffely (Sheila); and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Friday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m. at Bermuda Memorial Park, 1901 Bermuda Hundred Road, Chester, Virginia 23836. Arrangements made by the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834.
