Joseph Hoggood Sr.

September 21, 1940 — July 26, 2015

Joseph Ashton Hoggood Sr., 74, of Dinwiddie, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 26, 2015 after a brief illness. Joe was born September 21, 1940 in Petersburg, Virginia to Joseph Lee Hoggood and Harriett Brock Vaughan. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Barry Clayton Hoggood; and son, David Allen Hoggood. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1958 where he was a state champion swimmer, Marching Band Drum Major and played the French horn. On February 14, 1985, he married the former Barbara Ward Eanes. Joe served in the United States Marine Corps and Army Reserve for years. He was also employed by Virginia Power, Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company and worked as an independent truck driver for years prior to retirement in 1998. Joe was very active in Colonial Heights Youth athletics in the 1960's and 1970's and was instrumental in starting the youth umpiring association in the city. He also enjoyed reading, camping, spending time with his children and grandchildren and loved his faithful dog Squiggy. Joe was a member of First Christian Church, Petersburg, for years and was very active in leading the youth group there. Joe is survived by his two sons, Joseph Ashton Hoggood Jr.; step-son, Mark Eanes and wife, Kim; five grandchildren, Taylor, Madison, Garrett, Ashley, and Cara Hoggood and Olivia Eanes. He's also survived by one nephew, Adam Hoggood; two cousins, Ashton "Bubba" Brock and Debbie Brock; and two nieces, Beth Payne Moore and Christy Payne Elmore. A Celebration of Life service will be scheduled at a later time. Please make donations to your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements are being handled by E.
