Dr. Joseph Belton "J.B." Johnson of Oxford, Florida, died Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at the age of ninety. He was born on February 12, 1928, in Osaka, Virginia, to George W. and Roxie Ann Johnson, and is also predeceased by six sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of eighteen years, Bonnie "Lee" Sutherland Johnson; his daughter Ann-Mary (Dan) Lutzick of Winslow, Arizona; and stepson Brian Huneycutt of Scottsville, Virginia.
J.B. grew up in Wise County and spent most of his life in his beloved state of Virginia. After graduating from Appalachia High School in 1947, he earned his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech. He was an ROTC-commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and served in the Korean War in the Far East Command. Upon release from active duty, he worked briefly for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a hydraulics engineer in Knoxville, Tennessee.
J.B. then earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Medical College of Virginia and practiced in Bon Air, Virginia, until he retired in 1993. He remained in the U.S. Army Reserve Dental Corps and retired with the rank of Colonel in 1988. J.B. and Lee lived in Chester, Virginia, until they moved to the Villages, Florida, in 2004. He was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Petersburg, Virginia. His most ardent loves were God, country, and family.
Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8p.m. Monday, October 1, 2018 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Home, 2033 Blvd, where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 2. Interment with military honors will follow at Southlawn Memorial Park in S. Prince George, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion, Post 347, PO Box 1534, Lady Lake, Florida, 32158.
