Joseph Jeffery Messier

Joseph Jeffery Messier, 55, known by friends and family as Jeff, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2024, from complications with renal cancer that he battled with courage and quiet dignity since 2020. Born September 25, 1968, at NAS Corpus Christie, Texas, he was the son of Joseph and Jeannette Messier. Jeff is preceded in death by his stepson, Zacharie S. Hogwood. 

Jeff’s major focus was his children who he loved dearly. He worked in the cable industry for most of his life and started his own small business. He was an avid sports enthusiast, and a lifelong fan of the Commanders Football Team through good and bad times. 

He is survived by his fiancée, Tabitha Jan Bishop; four children, Joshua Messier, Brandon Messier, Jonathan Messier, Haley Messier; parents, Joseph and Jeannette Messier;  sister, Jennifer Ammar; stepdaughter, Carli J. Hogwood; stepson, Alexander D. Hogwood; grandsons, James A. Vaughan, Cairo Z. Vaughan, and Liam S. Hogwood; and other extended family members and friends. 

Jeff’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the healthcare professionals and hospice support that helped him through his battle with cancer. 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 21, 2024 at the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Friday evening, April 19, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
