Joseph Wilmer

December 30, 1923 — January 13, 2016

Joseph Black Wilmer, 92, of Chesterfield County went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fay Russell Wilmer, and by his parents, James Gorman Wilmer and Blanche Black Wilmer of Covington, VA. He was born at Galts Mill, Amherst County, VA., and raised in Covington. He enjoyed spending his childhood summers with his family on their farm near Mt Horeb Church in Amherst County. After graduating from high school he enlisted and served during WWII in Italy as an Army Intelligence Specialist assigned to Allied Forces Headquarters. After the war, Joe returned to civilian life and completed a B.S. Degree in Accounting at Tri-State University in Angola, Indiana in 1949. In 1959 he married Fay Lenore Russell. He supported his family working as an insurance agent for over forty years, continuing to work part-time until he was 80 years old. He was a dedicated and enthusiastic member of Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church since 1960, sharing friendship and fellowship worshiping the Lord. Affectionately known to his family as "Grandpa Joe" he is survived by three sons. Keith Allen Wilmer and wife, Carmen Thiriet Castilla residing in York County, Karl Joseph Wilmer in Hopkins, SC., and Kent Russell Wilmer in Richmond. Also two adult grandsons, LTJG Eric Thiriet Wilmer, U.S. Navy, Norfolk VA., and Brian Thiriet Wilmer in Boston MA., sister Barbara Wilmer Broach and husband, Joseph T. residing in Powhatan, and brother, James Porter Wilmer and wife, Juanita in Greenbelt, MD. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30pm on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Colonial Heights chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church , 17120 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834 with Reverend James M. Smith officiating.. Committal service to be private. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com
